The floodwater crept into many new areas of Bangkok on Friday - including Chatuchak, Lat Phrao intersection (pictured, above) and Ratchadaphisek - but authorities continue to insist the country's major international gateway, Suvarnabhumi airport, will not be flooded. If gates/canals work, estates safe
Published: 4/11/2011 at 08:42 PM - BANGKOK POST
Online news:
GIS expert Dr Seri Supranit toured Bang Chan and Lat Krabang industrial estates today to inspect the situation there. He has inspected various sites for over one month now to gather field data for daily flood analysis at TPBS tv daily report.
Here is today's report:
Chulalongkorn sluice gate in Pathum Thani sees lower water level. Everything is getting better soon.
Big Bag flood barrier can help slow down floodwater and can help protect Khlong Prapa from being invaded.
About 100 million cubic metres of water mass have invaded Bangkok North, about 800 million cubic metres left above to be managed.
Thon Buri side will see floodwater invade Rama II Rd in three days and the route to the South will be totally cut off as the Phetkasem Rd is now cut off due to flood.
Floodwaters from Vibhavadi and Phaholyothin now join at Lat Prao intersection. It will go towards Chatuchak and Ratchadapisek as both areas are lower than Vibhavadi or Phahonyothin down the road.
Bang Chan industrial estate is being invaded from Khlong Bang Chan and Khlong Samwa canals. Khlong Lorlae canal is the vulnerable point due to its inefficient waterflow. It now overflows its banks to Ban Chang estate. The solution is to speed up waterflow in all canals. Dr Seri thinks Bang Chan estate has good defence.
Lat Krabang estate faces problem from gates opening of Khlong 8, 9, but the government has now ordered the gates closed. Solution is also to speed up the waterflow from all the canals in the area.
The waterflow will then travel down to Suvarnabhumi airport which has big pump capacity to drain off water at the rate of 100 cubic metres per second, more than enough to handle the waterflow.
