Medical tourism is a large and growing sector within Thailand’s extensive tourism and healthcare industries. The country is extremely attractive to potential medical tourists and international patients for a number of important reasons: it has many internationally accredited hospitals, including thirty JCI-accredited hospitals; it has experienced, often Western-trained medical professionals; it has the latest medical technology; and it has significantly lower costs of treatment when compared to corresponding procedures in the West.

Taken together, all these factors – plus the country’s reputation as a popular tourist destination – have made Thailand one of the world’s top medical tourism destinations.

The primary destinations for medical tourism in Thailand include, but are not limited to, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Hua Hin, Koh Samui, Pattaya/Chonburi, and Phuket.

Statistics

Nearly 2.5 million medical tourists from countries around the world came to Thailand for medical treatment in 2012, with these numbers poised to show continued growth through 2013 and beyond. The Kingdom’s medical tourism industry’s rate of growth is approximately 16% per annum, with the country projected to generate some 100 billion Thai baht in annual revenue by the year 2015.

The Kasikorn Survey Center found that 60% of Thailand’s tourists – 1.48 million persons – visited Thailand in 2012 with the intention of receiving medical care or treatment. 45% of these medical tourists – 670,000 patients – had a 1:1 ratio of accompanying party traveling with them; i.e., an additional 670,000 visitors to Thailand. It is estimated that Thailand’s medical tourism industry generated at least 140,000 million Thai baht in the year 2012.

Source Countries

Medical tourists to Thailand from abroad have doubled from 2008-2012, the leading source countries for these visitors being the UK, the US, the Middle East (UAE, Kuwait, and Oman), Germany, Australia, Japan, and Thailand’s fellow ASEAN countries.

JCI Accreditation

Thailand has the largest private hospital in Asia: Bumrungrad International Hospital.

Thailand was also the first Asian country to achieve the prestigious Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation in 2002; as of September 2012, 30 hospitals are now JCI-accredited. Additionally, more than 350 Thai hospitals have achieved Hospital Accreditation (HA), awarded by the Ministry of Public Health. These are excellent hospitals providing first-rate medical care by experienced professionals using the latest technology.

Medical Professional

More than 500 physicians now practicing in Thailand are American Board-certified. Many of these doctors have won prestigious medical awards for their work, and have attained further medical qualifications from Western nations, including the US and the UK.

Many patients have noted not only the total professionalism of Thai doctors, nurses, and medical staff, but also the nature and degree of the care they receive in Thailand, attributed to the Thai people’s generous hospitality, gentle manner, and Thai service touch.

Medical Technology

Thai hospitals and clinics have kept abreast of all the latest advances in both medical technical and patient care, and medical facilities in the country are well-equipped to cover a very wide range of procedures, operations, and specialty treatments. For example, a major private hospital in Thailand treats some 1.2 million patients annually and offers more than 34 distinct specialties.

Hospital Standards and Certification

Many healthcare providers in Thailand are ISO14000- and ISO9000-certified. Although the ISO certification is not an international hospital accreditation, these rigorous standards of hospital management and environmental specifications are a reliable sign of quality assurance in healthcare; they testify to the hospital’s commitment to sustainable, high-quality standards and consistent ancillary services. Furthermore, more than 350 Thai hospitals have acquired Hospital Accreditation (HA), awarded by the Ministry of Public Health (Thailand).

Medical Treatments

Although popularly known for sex-change procedures, in reality Thailand offers some of the world's best value for the entire range of health care procedures and treatments.

Dermatology procedures, dental care, and fertility treatments are among the specialties most chosen by medical tourists.

Furthermore, many of Thailand’s hospitals have received CCPC (Clinical Care Program Certification), which assures excellence in the integration and coordination of treatment of specific serious ailments such as primary stroke, heart failure, many types of cancer, chronic kidney disease, diabetes mellitus, joint replacement, and other major conditions.

Bumrungrad International Hospital, the flagship of medical tourism in Thailand, is known for advanced medical procedures including coronary artery bypass grafts, hip replacements and spinal fusions. It is well-documented that the prices in Thailand are among the best in the world.

One medical tourism expert notes that, “They don’t have problems with malpractice, and the prices reflect that.”

Medical Costs

Thailand is now widely recognized as providing among the best value in the world for a diverse spectrum of healthcare treatments. According to Patients Beyond Borders, major procedures can be 50-70 percent less expensive in Thailand than in the US. It is not unusual for patients to save up to 80% on the price they would pay for comparable treatment in the US, UK, or Australia.

Patients are not sacrificing quality care, treatment, or facilities in paying these relatively low rates; all the latest technology and equipment are used in Thailand despite the attractive costs. For example, heart bypass surgery that often costs more than $144,000 in the US could be received in Thailand for approximately $26,000.

Foreign Language Capabilities

English-speaking general practitioners, dentists and surgeons are typically available in private hospitals and specialist clinics throughout the Kingdom. Moreover, Thailand’s larger private hospitals offer translator services in many languages, including Arabic, Bengali, French, German, Korean, Mandarin, Chinese, Vietnamese and Japanese.

Service and Hospitality

Thailand is famous for the high quality and personal nature of its care, based on the gentle traits of Thai culture and its well-known hospitality to visitors. Countless patients have remarked on being treated like they were in a 5-star hotel rather than a hospital. Thai service extends outside the medical establishment to the hospitality industry in general and to the culture as a whole.[

Holistic and Alternative Treatments

In the past decade, Thailand has become renowned for the quality of its holistic health and alternative treatment centers, offering some of the finest spas and wellness centers to be found anywhere. Particularly popular methods and treatments include Nuat Thai (Thai massage), aromatherapy, detoxification, anti-ageing, Thai Foot Massage, Ayurveda, and yoga. A number of these therapies are intrinsically Thai and found exclusively in Thailand.
